Switzerland's 2024 school holidays are set entirely at cantonal level โ there is no national school calendar. With 26 cantons setting their own dates, holiday windows can vary significantly even between neighbouring regions.
2024 is a leap year, and Easter falls early on 31 March. Most cantons schedule spring holidays around this Easter date, though the precise two-week windows vary. French-speaking cantons (vacances de Pรขques) and German-speaking cantons (Frรผhlingsferien or Osterferien) use different naming conventions and sometimes different date windows.
Summer holidays (Sommerferien): Swiss summer breaks are typically 5โ6 weeks โ shorter than in Germany, France, or Spain. Most cantons run their summer break from early July to mid-August. French-speaking cantons tend to have slightly longer breaks.
Swiss National Day (1 August, Thursday): Schools are closed on National Day. Taking Friday 2 August as a bridge day effectively extends summer for many families with a four-day weekend mid-break.
Carnival/Fasnacht break: A short break of a few days in February or March, linked to Carnival celebrations. Most prominent in Basel, Lucerne, and other traditionally Catholic areas. Not observed in all cantons.
